What Is Aluminium Anodising?
Anodising is a technique that is used to increase the thickness of the natural oxide layer that forms on aluminium. As aluminium is not subject to rust in the way that metals such as iron or steel are, it oxidises on contact with oxygen which is actually beneficial in preventing the underlying metal from corrosion.
How Does This Work?
In the anodisation process, the aluminium becomes an anode in the electrical circuit by initially passing an electrical current through it and then submerging it in an acid bath. This process causes oxygen to be released at the anode which then forms an oxide layer by reacting with the aluminium.
It is possible to produce different thicknesses of the oxide layer subject to requirements and this is determined by the amount of time the aluminium spends in the tank of water.
What Are The Benefits Of Aluminium Anodising?
There are a number of significant benefits to aluminium anodizing, the primary one being that this prevents wear and corrosion. However, it is also allows better adhesion for glues and primers than untreated metal and can even be used for cosmetic effects such as coatings that absorb dyes.
How Is Anodising Used?
Anodising is used in a wide range of settings and industries such as aerospace, building and construction, industrial electronics, military and security and many others. It’s uses are extremely diverse and just a few examples include furniture and seating; coach building; bath and shower accessories; doors; windows; heating and lighting.
